Atlantic District hosts free Mite jamborees!

The Atlantic District will again be hosting a free Cross Ice jamboree for all 6&U and 8&U teams.  The dates are Saturday, September 25 & 26.  Locations will be at the Iceworks Quad Rinks in Aston, PA as well as the Ice Vault, Wayne, NJ.  We ask that you register with the rink closest to your club.

Now is the time to register your teams!  Please contact Mary Ann Danish at Iceworks at mdanish@iceworks.net or Nancy Hughes at the Ice Vault at nancyh@icevault.com.

Under-10 Girls Jamborees

The Mid-Atlantic Women's Hockey Association Hockey will host two 10-and-under girls jamborees during the upcoming hockey season -- on Saturday evening, Oct. 23, 2010, and on Saturday evening, Feb. 12, 2011. Ten-and-under girls from throughout the Mid-Atlantic are invited to participate, even if they are not rostered on an all-girls team for the 2010-2011 season. MAWHA is currently seeking a host organization and rink for each event.

In the spirit of promoting girls ice hockey, we ask for the cooperation of all Atlantic and Southeastern district member clubs (CBHL, DVHL, NJYHL), either in organizing a team, working with another club to establish a team, and arranging your Mites and Squirts teams schedules around these relatively brief events so that girls may participate without conflicts.

In the spirit of the American Development Model, the jamborees are designed to be fun, busy events that take place within the frame of half a hockey day, usually a Saturday afternoon/evening, to open the door to girls hockey for new players and to broaden the hockey experience of girls already in the sport.

Girls born in 2000 or later, and who play on youth travel or recreational Mites and Squirts teams, should be encouraged to participate, along with any girls who play in house leagues or in rink-sponsored hockey basics classes.

MAWHA member clubs, or clubs in the DVHL, NJYHL and CBHL, who have some but not enough players for a minimum roster of 10 skaters plus a goalie, should contact other clubs to collaborate on a 10-and-under team. The name of the team and the uniform is far less important than forming the teams and getting more girls to play.

Dan Rodricks, MAWHA’s Blue Division representative (443-600-6719), will serve as jamboree coordinator and help any club form a team and ensure that any age-eligible girl who wants to participate in the jamboree has a team on which to play.

If possible, other MAWHA girls’ games should be scheduled at the same arena where the jamboree takes place, during, before or after the jamboree.

The jamborees can be full-ice or cross-ice games.

The jamboree coordinator, working with the participating clubs, will seed the jamboree so that teams of new and developing players and teams of more experienced U10 players have appropriate match-ups.

The jamboree coordinator requests proposals from clubs/rinks for the hosting of the events.

All girls rostered on Mites and Squirts teams in New Jersey,  Delaware,  New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina are eligible to participate in the All-Girls Under-10 Jamborees on Oct, 24, 2010 and on fEB. 12, 2011. Girls who play on youth teams (coed, travel or recreational) are eligible. We will assign you to a team so you can meet other girls who play hockey and have some great hockey fun in our half-day jamboree. The fee for players not already rostered on U10 teams is $15 per jamboree.

Send check, payable to MAWHA, and this application to:

USA Hockey Season Date Change

In January, the USA Hockey Board approved different dates for the season.

This was done to satisfy the needs of our member programs, provide an opportunity for new members to try hockey during the summer months and to simplify the registration process for individuals. Unfortunately this change was perceived by some as not receiving a full seasons worth of membership.

To address those concerns, USA Hockey President Ron DeGregorio has ordered the following changes:

• Return to the September 1-August 31 regular playing season and registration period for all renewing memberships. This means that there is no change from previous years for your membership period.

• Open online registration for the upcoming season April 1 for registration for all members (this is an important need for many of our local programs).

• Membership for new members is effective from the date of registration with full benefits, including insurance, when participating with a member program.

• Membership for all participants is through August 31st of the regular playing season for which they are registering.

• The benefit is that all new members can complete registration for a member program as early as April 1 without having to register again on September 1 of the same year. Of course, renewing members will be able to register as early as April 1 for the following September 1 season, easing the administration for our hockey programs.

• For example, a new member registering from April 1 through August 31 will receive membership throughout the summer months along with a full season registration from September 1 through August 31. When a renewing member whose current registration is in place through August 31 is directed by their program to register early (between April 1 and August 31), they will be registering for the upcoming season of September 1 through August 31.

• As always, your local program will instruct you when to register for the upcoming season.

What this means to your program:

• 2009-10 season registrations are valid through August 31, 2010

• Online registration will be available for 2010-11 beginning April 1, 2010

• Registration software for the 2010-11 season will be available in May 2010

• Registrations processed from April 1 through August 31 will allow that participant to register in a current season program and in a ‘next season’ program. In other words, your 2009-10 software will accept 2010-11 confirmation numbers.

• Programs have the option to operate through the summer months using either the 2009-10 or 2010-11 software.

This solution helps our programs register participants as early as is necessary while addressing concerns expressed by some participants. If you have any questions or need additional information please contact Rae Briggle at raeb@usahockey.org

USA Hockey Implements Locker Room Supervision

USA Hockey is concerned with locker room activities between minor players; minor players and adult players; adults being alone with individual minor players in locker rooms; and with nonofficial

or non-related adults having unsupervised access to minor participants at sanctioned team events.  It is the policy of USA Hockey and USA Hockey InLine that all Affiliates, Districts, leagues, and

local hockey programs have at least one responsible adult present directly monitoring the locker room during all team events to assure that only participants, (coaches and players), approved

team personnel and family members are permitted in the locker room and to supervise the conduct in the locker room. Any individual meetings with a minor participant and a coach in a

locker room shall require a responsible adult be with the coach.  Further, responsible adults must personally monitor the locker room environment at all times while participants are present and also

make sure the locker room is appropriately secured during times when minor participants are on the ice.

Teams, leagues and local hockey associations shall also comply with the USA Hockey Coed  locker room policy set out below.

(Note: This is to be inserted between sections D & E of the Policies section of the 2010-2011 Annual Guide on page 35. Subsequent policies will be re-lettered.)

USA Hockey and the NHL Partner together and produces the "ADM" - American Development Model

"We're extremely pleased to share the news of the revolutionary American Development Model that will be available for local associations to utilize beginning with the 2009-10 season. The ADM was endorsed by the USA Hockey Board of Directors at its 2009 Winter Meeting and has also been endorsed by the National Hockey League. The American Development Model furthers our growth and development efforts as it will provide our member associations -- for the first time ever -- an optimal development blueprint for youth players that will lead to a better experience for our current players and also help attract new players to our sport.

It's hard to put in words the excitement and buzz that has been and will continue to be generated by this new initiative. It will take time for local associations around the country to educate their constituents on the merits of adopting the American Development Model, but there's no doubt that the principles of the program are right for kids." (Ron DeGregorio, USA Hockey President)

The Atlantic District is working with USA Hockey to help get the ADM program started.  For up to date information on the ADM program, please go to:  http://www.usahockey.com/ADM/default.aspx?NAV=AF_04&ID=252288

We Need To Acquire and Retain Hockey Players!

At the annual meeting in June, USA Hockey representatives came in from Colorado and presented to our members an outline on how to acquire and retain youth hockey players within the Atlantic District.  Our membership growth, acquisition and retention in the district was a surprise to all when the actual figures were given to us.  Suggestions have been made by USA Hockey to help us and we are glad to give all of our clubs and rinks this information.  Please read over it and help us to keep the sport of ice hockey growing in the Atlantic District!
