Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teens today, and we are often unaware that a child is in crisis until it is too late.  While some studies suggest that participation in team sports may have a protective effect, it is still critically important that parents, coaches, and other community members have the knowledge and skills necessary to keep our children safe.

The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association Parent Engagement Program will be hosting a Suicide Awareness and Intervention training at Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey on Wednesday, January 29 from 7:30 – 9:30 pm.  Parents, coaches, administrators, and other community members  are invited to come learn more about how to:

  • Identify risk factors of someone in crisis
  • Understand protective factors against suicide
  • “Ask clearly and directly” and open a dialogue about suicide with someone in crisis
  • Actively listen to individuals in crisis
  • Access emergency resources when necessary

Please RSVP to atlanticpep@gmail.com by Monday, January 27.
