New Jersey Governor Murphy's Announcement for Indoor Sports

November 30, 2020

AAHA Membership,
Earlier today, New Jersey Governor Murphy announced a temporary pause of all “indoor youth and adult sports” which goes into effect on Saturday, 6am, December 5, 2020. There were other nuances to the announcement and we are waiting for the final Executive Order, as well as Department of Health Guidelines before we determine exactly what activities we can and cannot sanction. What is clear is that organized team practices and games for both youth, girls and adult hockey will not be allowed beginning on December 5, 2020.

While we understand the “pause” announced by the Governor is for COVID mitigation, we would like to see more specific data and other information as to the basis for pausing indoor sports, especially considering that casinos and other non-essential establishments are permitted to operate.

The health and well-being of youth athletes is an important matter, and it must take into consideration both their physical as well as their mental well-being. We know these shut-downs can cause anxiety and depression, especially in young people. We know and understand your frustration. We are hoping to engage with Governor Murphy’s staff and the Department of Health to offer alternatives to these current restrictions.

Respectfully,

Glenn Hefferan
AAHA President
