Nick Singer knows that hockey can be more than just a sport. 

That’s why he founded the Mena Singer Foundation, an organization dedicated to keeping hockey players affected by breast cancer playing the game as long as they want to. The organization offers the financial and emotional support many athletes need as a loved one battles the disease. 

“Coming from a hockey family, we know that your hockey team is your second family,” Singer said. “It’s more than just an outlet, hockey can be an escape, but also it's your support network. We want to make sure that nobody gets bounced out of the sport.”

This October, Singer is hoping to raise awareness of his foundation in order to broaden their reach and effectiveness. They are accepting donations via their website, as they always are, as well as on Facebook for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 

However, Singer pointed out that helping those affected by this disease is not a 31-day endeavour for them. They hosted their flagship Breast Cancer Awareness game this past February.

“The point that we try to drive home is that breast cancer awareness should last more than a month anyway.”
