NEWARK, N.J. - Atlantic Affiliate Coach-in-Chief Ryan Carter received the Dr. John J. McMullen Service to New Jersey Hockey Award on Sunday, Jan. 19 during the NJ Devils game against the Ottawa Senators at the Prudential Center. A member of the affiliate for more than 30 years, he has given back to the hockey community as a player and coach.

Carter currently serves as head coach at St. Joseph Metuchen, where he is also the dean of students. He attended the school and was the fourth leading scorer of all time, earning him a spot in the Saint Joseph Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019. Prior to returning to the school full-time in 2023, he served as a Port Authority Police Officer for 20 years, spending many of his days at the Holland Tunnel and headquarters in Jersey City.

Two of his former players were selected in the NHL Draft, and one player is currently in the NHL development pipeline. Carter prides himself on a reputation of helping players develop a passion for the game, with more than 40% continuing to play at the collegiate level.

In addition to high school hockey, he has coached youth hockey for many years. His involvement has grown over time, and he was quickly recruited to join the Atlantic Affiliate’s coaching education program. In 2022, Carter was appointed to the Atlantic Affiliate coach-in-chief role by USA Hockey.

As leader of the program, he has worked to expand coaching education opportunities with a stronger focus on supporting the growth of girls hockey and the disabled disciplines. Family and friends joined him at the game to celebrate his accomplishments and commitment to hockey.
